A Starter Guide to Creating a Brand for Your Craft Brewery

While you don’t exactly have to be a design whiz in order to start developing your craft brewery’s brand, it is an important part of the process that you’ll want to invest in. Think about some of the breweries you’ve visited that have really caught your eye. What was the logo? How were their beers labeled? Did they have creative names for each brew? What do you think of when the name of this brewery comes to mind? These are all important questions to ask yourself, and then try to emulate the key parts of the answers in your own designs for your brand. Choosing a Good NameOf course, the first step is choosing a name that can truly act as a launch pad for a memorable brand. It’s the first impression you’ll make on people, and you want it to be positive and lasting. A good name can connect your customers with your brand almost immediately. And remember, renaming your business is a whole other can of worms — so you definitely want to try to get this right the first time.Design a Killer LogoThis might be something that you actually want to outsource. Graphic design can be pricey, but it’s almost always worth it in the end. The craft beer industry is only continuing to grow, which means more competition is popping up by the day. In order to really make a splash in the industry, you need to stand out- and part of that is having a killer logo. The perfect logo is unique but still identifies you clearly as a brewery. The logo will go quite literally everywhere — your website, your signage, even your merchandise. So, make sure it’s a good one!Pick a cohesive color schemeNothing is worse than spending time and effort choosing a memorable name and logo, only to have it be ruined by a color scheme that isn’t aesthetically pleasing. As a rule of thumb, you should consider sticking to neutral, dark colors with a pop of bold color. You want the colors of your design to be warm and inviting while still standing out among the competition.Consider the Location and Layout of Your TaproomYou may not immediately think that the location and layout of your taproom would be a major part of your brand, but it is! The best location will be in an attractive neighborhood that is in close proximity to the clientele you’re trying to attract. Consider the size of the location and the must-have elements of the space. Do you need a large space to host events? A staging area for live music? What about an outdoor space? All of these and more are important questions to ask, because they will immensely impact the vibe of the space and, therefore, your brewery. Think about how you want people to feel when they walk inside, and start there. This is Just the StartOf course, this isn’t a comprehensive guide to building a brand! Instead, it’s a place to start. Consider these elements the building blocks of a killer brewery brand.

Our list of Pittsburgh breweries is home to some of the best beer in the region. From Cinderlands to Dancing Gnome, Pittsburgh is a gem for craft beer enthusiasts. The region is home to many breweries: see our full list of Pittsburgh BreweriesThis post features five of the most popular breweries in Pittsburgh and showcases notable beers from each, and other awesome reasons to visit each one!Cinderlands WarehouseCinderlands, located in the Strip District of Pittsburgh, is known for its delicious, unfiltered beer. The people at Cinderlands really know their stuff and are always up to something - they meticulously create beers with an emphasis on science and beer chemistry. Notable beers from Cinerlands include Squish and Tracks Again.SquishSquish is an unfiltered pale ale with prominent notes of mango and pineapple with hints of pine. It’s soft and juicy with a full body and maintains a mildly dry finish and low bitterness.Tracks AgainTracks Again is Cinderlands’ pilsner. With straw color, it maintains a little bit of haze.Apart from the wonderful craft beer, the food at Cinderlands is also impressive. Sandwiches and a small–but mighty–section of entrees preceded by yummy snacks and appetizers are the stars of the show. The overall vibe and aesthetic of the brewery are wonderfully enticing!Grist House Craft BreweryGrist House is a staple in Pittsburgh craft beer. Known mostly for its Hazedelic Juice Grenade, a New England IPA, and one of the brewery’s flagship beers, Grist House is a household name around these parts. Another popular Grist House beer is Chameleon.Hazedelic Juice GrenadeThis New England or Hazy IPA is an exceptionally dense NEIPA bursting with thick and juicy flavors of orange and mango. This tropical beer concoction leaves you wanting more.ChameleonThis beer’s name does not do it justice - it really stands out! Chameleon contains bountiful notes of citrus fruits like papaya and pineapple. It uses a “select yeast strain,” and emits a pleasantly crisp finish with an inviting bitterness.Grist House has an up-and-coming taproom being built in Collier Township, just southeast of Pittsburgh, at the Nike Missile Site - a missile command center from during the Cold War! It’s not open yet, but the brewery’s Millvale location is definitely worth the visit in the meantime.Hop Farm Brewing CompanyHop Farm, located in the Lawrenceville neighborhood in Pittsburgh, was established in 2014 and is a creator of delicious craft beers. Among other breweries in the Lawrenceville area, Hop Farm stands out because of its efforts in sustainability and its friendly folks at the brewery. Notable beers from Hop Farm include Pittsburgh Pale Ale, Sahr Pahr, and Neon Turtles.Pittsburgh Pale AlePittsburgh Pale Ale is a delightful pale ale made with El Dorado and Mosaic hops. It contains strong floral notes on the nose accompanied by hints of citrus and berry. It's got just the right amount of hoppiness with a slightly dry finish.Sahr PahrSahr Pahr is Hop Farm’s ongoing sour series. Hop Farm releases seasonal rotations of these beers - the most recent one being Sahr Pahr Fruit Punch. This beer will make your lips pucker and will smack you with potent berry and fruit flavors.Neon TurtlesNeon Turtles is a Double New England IPA. It’s brewed with Mosaic and Citivia hops and packs bountiful notes of stone fruit and peach flavors.Eleventh Hour Brewing CompanyEleventh Hour is also located in the Lawrenceville neighborhood. The brewery is known solely for its beers - Eleventh Hours knows how to brew. Flagship beers from Eleventh Hour include New Cult and Archer.New CultNew Cult is a New England IPA. It's brewed with flaked oats and flaked wheat to create a soft and full mouthfeel. It uses Citra and Mosaic and is packed with citrus, passionfruit, mango and grapefruit flavors.ArcherArcher is Eleventh Hour’s German Kolsch style ale. It pours a glistening straw yellow with a strong white head. It has classic floral and cracker notes from the Pilsner malt, and it finishes smoothly.Dancing Gnome BreweryDancing Gnome is located in Sharpsburg and is one of the most coveted names in Pittsburgh beer. Its main brewery and its taproom are located down the street from each other and both serve pioneering yet traditional ales. The two staple beers from Dancing Gnome are undoubtedly Lustra and Infinite Highway.LustraLustra is an American pale ale. It picks up a toasted wheat bread flavor from the malt used and contains heavy citrus and other fruit aromas. It incorporates a clean bitterness on the finish that pulls you in for more.Infinite HighwayInfinite Highway is a Double IPA. It’s double dry-hopped with Mosaic, Citra, and Galaxy hops, and maintains low bitterness with a cozy mouthfeel. Notes of passionfruit and pineapple are potent in this wonderful beer. Pittsburgh’s craft beer scene is explosive and commendable. There are always new things on the horizon for this Western Pennsylvania brewery goldmine. Don’t neglect the phenomenal creations in Pittsburgh that are craft beer, and be sure to check out one or more breweries on this list the next time you’re in the steel city.

Breaking News? “Happy Taps” Taking Over Beer Zombies Bottle Shop on Warm Springs in Las Vegas?

Las Vegas locals and craft beer lovers are buzzing with speculation as Beer Zombies Bottle Shop on Warm Springs in Las Vegas has quietly closed its doors. Known for its eclectic selection of unique brews and a cult-like following, Beer Zombies is still a favorite of beer aficionados in the area with their brewery near downtown. The closure came with little warning, leaving fans wondering what’s next for the space that had become a beloved hangout for craft beer lovers and neighborhood locals alike. But there’s a new twist: it looks like Beer Zombies won’t be gone for long without a replacement. Right next door to the popular SkinnyFats, a new name has appeared on the horizon – Happy Taps. No official announcement has been made, but rumors are swirling that SkinnyFats might be behind this new venture. The resemblance to the SkinnyFats branding, right down to the playful smiley face and the name’s upbeat vibe, has fans drawing some intriguing conclusions.A New Concept in the Making? If the connection between SkinnyFats and Happy Taps is real, this would be a notable expansion for the brand known for its unique “Live Healthy, Live Happy” menu. SkinnyFats has carved out a loyal customer base by catering to both the health-conscious and the indulgent with a menu split into “healthy” and “happy” options. Could Happy Taps be the latest addition to this concept – a place to enjoy a range of taps in a fun, laid-back atmosphere? It would make sense for SkinnyFats to bring a new kind of beverage experience to complement its distinctive food offerings, especially in an area that already has a loyal following. What We Know (and What We Don’t)At this point, details are sparse, and neither SkinnyFats nor Beer Zombies has made an official statement. Some locals have even reported seeing work being done on the space formerly occupied by Beer Zombies, hinting that changes are already underway. A new sign on the street marquee for “Happy Taps” has already gone up but no other external branding seems to be visible on the building. We will get some photos soon.As SkinnyFats continues to evolve, a venture like Happy Taps could align perfectly with their brand philosophy. “Live Hoppy, Drink Happy,” anyone? The SkinnyFats Connection: Coincidence or Master Plan? The proximity of Happy Taps to SkinnyFats can’t be ignored, but without official confirmation, we’re left with speculation. If SkinnyFats is indeed behind Happy Taps, it would be a strategic move, allowing them to cater to a lively audience that loves unique food and drink experiences. This wouldn’t be SkinnyFats' first creative spin-off; they’ve experimented with different concepts before, always keeping an eye on what resonates with their customer base.Could this new spot be a taproom experience with the same creative twist SkinnyFats brings to its food? Will we see a menu of craft beers alongside quirky, fun food options? For now, all we can do is speculate. As more details emerge, we’ll keep you updated on what’s next for the spot that was once Beer Zombies. Whether Happy Taps will live up to the legacy of its predecessor remains to be seen, but for now, it seems like Las Vegas may be getting a new destination to “drink happy.”Stay tuned for updates – as soon as we know more, you’ll be the first to hear!Happy Taps - Warm Springs - Las Vegas NV

Purchase Local Drinks at Your Local RetailersFinally, you can also drink locally by purchasing local drinks at local retailers.
Kitchen Brigade – Davenport IA

UNFORTUNATELY THEY HAVE CLOSEDOn a recent trip, we stumbled across a gem in Davenport Iowa, the Kitchen Brigade located inside Stompbox Brewery. The passion the chef puts into his food is clearly tasted in this exquisite small menu of unique dishes. One of our favorites had to be the Pork Tomahawk Schnitzel with mustard cream, onion fennel relish, and brown butter spaetzle. The size of this thing alone will take you aback. If you are looking for a place to awaken your tastebuds in the Quad Cities, Kitchen Brigade should be near the top of your list. This restaurant is located inside Stompbox Brewery, which by the by has some amazing brews. Some of our team was in Davenport Iowa for an event and as we do in every city found a brewery that serves food as well; nothing better than a great meal and flight of delicious beer after a long 12-hour day. We were not going into the evening expecting to be WOW'd, but we sure were wrong. You would not suspect the level of culinary delight from a small kitchen window in a local brewery; in Davenport IA for that matter. (No offense to all you Davenport'ers, but you know what we mean this level of food is normally found in large metropolitan cities). From the moment our appetizers arrived, we knew we were in for a treat. The meal was flawless and the chef even made a point to come out to every table to ensure all of his guests were happy. If you are even in Davenport, be sure to give Kitchen Brigade a try!

A new brewery is coming to Northern Illinois in Spring Grove. Pratt Brewing Co. will be offering beer releases to the public for local pick-up at our Spring Grove brewery. Pick-ups will be available on a first-come, first-served basis only. While they wait for state approvals, all of their award-winning beers will be available for distribution and retail sale only, with a future taproom opening date to be announced at a later date.Pratt Brewing Company sparked as an interest, which has been forged into a passion. The Pratts, currently work in Spring Grove, IL at the local forge shop, Scot Forge, where they also met. Like many, they had an interest in craft beer and soon wanted to try thier hand at homebrewing. It all started with a for-fun, something-to-learn-together, brewing class using the setup provided by their kitchen stove, in 2017. Since then, they have been developing several signature beers, expanding their equipment beyond the stove, and experimenting using all the fun science that comes with the craft of brewing. This work has inspired them to open a brewery featuring and future taproom with a rotation of thier latest drafts.Staying local was crucial to them. The Spring Grove community is not only where the couple works but where they spend their lives and have grown a family. They knew this was the only place to begin to grow a beer business.
