Monument City Brewing Turns Goetze's Caramel Creams Into a Bulls-Eye's Amber Ale

Baltimore's candy aisle and its beer scene are teaming up again. Monument City Brewing and Goetze's Candy Company, working with Whitey's Liquors, have released Bulls-Eye's Caramel Creams Amber Ale, a new take on a hometown collaboration that first appeared in 2018. The beer debuted at Monument City's Highlandtown taproom on Friday, October 30, and the brewery is throwing an official launch party this Friday, November 6.

What's in the can

Bulls-Eye's is a 5.2% ABV amber ale built on a rich, malt-forward base with notes of caramel sweetness and hints of vanilla. It also uses some of the same ingredients Goetze's puts into its Caramel Creams candy. The name is a nod to the candy's history, since Caramel Creams were originally sold as Bulls-Eyes.

From stout to amber

Earlier versions of the collaboration were brewed as a stout. For this third round, the partners switched to an easy-drinking amber ale. "We wanted to take a fresh look at this collaboration and introduce something new while staying true to what makes it special," said Ken Praay, founder and CEO of Monument City Brewing. "Moving from a stout to an amber ale allows us to highlight the caramel and malt flavors in a different way while celebrating our Baltimore roots."

Goetze's CEO Mitchell Goetze called it a celebration of Baltimore and the businesses that call it home. Goetze's dates to 1895, and Monument City was founded in 2014 by brothers Ken and Matt Praay.

Where to find it

Bulls-Eye's is pouring on draft and sold in 12 oz. cans to go at Monument City Brewing, 1 N. Haven St. in Baltimore. Cans are also on shelves at Whitey's Liquors in Linthicum Heights, Wine Source, Canton Crossing and Lighthouse Liquors while supplies last. It is a limited release with no wider distribution announced, so the launch party on November 6 is a good excuse to grab some fresh.

Bottom line

If you grew up with a bag of Caramel Creams in the pantry, this is Baltimore nostalgia in a can, and the move to an amber ale makes it an easy one to share around the table this fall.
